Brother 1034D Vs 3034D Comparison In Detail

Brother 1034D and 3034D are quality sergers, but they belong to entirely different segments. 1034D made its name for affordability and quality. It is a very popular entry level serger in the US. 3034D is a slightly more advanced offering from Brother. It became popular for the quality it offered. The comparison is interesting because both sergers have many things in common.

Brother 1034D Vs 3034D - Major Feature Differences

The first thing you will notice is the colored tension dials of Brother 1034D. The tension dials on 3034D are all of the same color. The color of the tension dial does not affect your sewing experience. So you can ignore that difference, even though multi-color dials are aesthetically pleasing.  Other main areas of differences are discussed below.

Stitch Width & Length

The stitch width range on 1034D is from 5-7mm from left needle and that on 3034D is 3-7mm.

The stitch length range on 1034D is 2.0 - 4.0 mm (for overlock stitch), 1.0-2.0 mm (for narrow stitch), 1.0 mm (for roll stitch), whereas on 3034D is 0.8 - 4.0mm.

The stitch width and length adjustment is also different on both sergers. On 1034D you have lever like switches (like the ones you see on very old ceiling fan regulators) for adjustment and on 3034D you have knobs. I was more comfortable with the knobs. As far as the stitch width and length range is concerned, 3034D offers more options, which is understandable as 3034D is placed above 1034D. Even then, the range available on 1034D will be more than enough in most cases.

Machine Weight

Brother 1034D is 1.45 lbs heavier than 3034D. It is not a huge difference, but it is something that you need to consider, if you move the machine around.

Needle Adjustment

Brother 3034D has individual adjustment screws for two needles. However on 1034D, there is only one screw to adjust or remove both needles.

Editor comment

As far as performance and ease of use is concerned, both machines are very similar. The stitch quality is excellent on both machines. However, in terms of build quality, I would rate Brother 3034D slightly higher than 1034D. The former also provides more customization options given the range of stitch width and length available on the serger (which is understandable for a higher version). One thing to note is that, at the time of writing this comparison (5 July 2017), Brother 3034D does not feature in the list of Brother's Current Product Listing for US. We are not sure whether it is discontinued or not.

Brother 1034D on the other hand is a favorite for those who are looking for entry level sergers. Its quality, affordability and ease of use made it popular among sewers who are looking for a budget serger.

PS: A newer version of Brother 1034D is now available, check out Brother 1034DX.
