Singer 9960 Vs Brother PC420PRW Comparison In Detail

Affordable advanced sewing machines are always hard to find. It is even more difficult to find quality ones. When Singer 9960 and Brother PC420PRW entered the sewing arena, we found answers to both issues. Both these machines are absolutely feature packed. But it was not just the features that made these two machines popular. It was the quality of stitches. Personally, I am a big fan of these two machines, so I can't wait to compare them in detail.

Singer 9960 Vs Brother PC420PRW - Major Feature Differences

Both machines come with essential computerized sewing features like LCD screen, sewing start/stop button, speed control slider, programmable needle up/down, automatic needle threader and thread cutter etc. Now let us focus on areas where these two machines differ.

Built-in Stitches

This is the first difference that you will notice. Singer 9960 comes with a whopping 600 built-in stitches. I am not sure whether you will get enough time to use all the available stitches, no matter how curious you are. Brother PC420PRW on the other hand comes with 294 stitch patterns. 294 is not a small number at all, but when you compare it with the 600 stitches of Singer 9960, it may look small. What I can say is that, both machines have good enough variety of stitches to choose from.

Buttonhole Styles and Lettering Font

The Singer machine offers 13 one-step buttonhole styles whereas the Brother machine comes pretty close with 10 one-step buttonhole styles. As far as lettering fonts are concerned, 9960 has 5 fonts and PC420PRW has 3.

Presser Foot Pressure

The presser foot pressure on Singer 9960 is not adjustable, it is set automatically. The same on Brother PC420PRW is adjustable. Even though the automatic presser foot pressure on the Singer machine does a good job with different types of fabric, I prefer an option to adjust it. Adjustable presser foot pressure on PC420PRW gives you the option to fine tune the pressure exerted on the fabric. This is handy while switching from lightweight to thick fabric.

Feed Sytem

Singer 9960 comes with 7 segment box feed and Brother PC420PRW comes with 6 segment feed system. In practical conditions, I couldn't find any difference in feeding. Both machines feed fabrics smoothly.

Locking Stitch Button

Singer 9960 has a dedicated locking stitch button for securing the stitches at the beginning and end. This can be done with just the push of a button. On Brother PC420PRW, the same function is possible but it is incorporated in the reverse sewing button. On the Singer machine, there are separate buttons for reverse sewing and locking stitch.

My Custom Stitch

This is my favorite feature on Brother PC420PRW. With My Custom Stitch, you can sew stitch patterns that you design yourself. You need to draw the design on a grid sheet, then enter the coordinates on the machine and then save it in the memory for later use. This feature is not available on Singer 9960.

Wide Extension Table

Singer 9960 comes with an included wide extension table. However, the wide table is an additional purchase on Brother PC420PRW. The extra space is really useful, especially if you do a lot of quilting.

Knee Lifter

Brother PC420PRW comes with an included knee lifter. The knee lifter gives you the freedom of raising or lowering the presser foot with your knee. So you can keep your hands engaged on the fabric. At first, you might not feel it as important as other features, but it is very useful if you sew a lot. Singer 9960 does not have knee lifter.

Singer 9960 comes with a soft dust cover, whereas Brother PC420PRW comes with an included hard protective case.

Editor comment

Feature wise, Singer 9960 and Brother PC420PRW differ a lot. However, the common factor is the stitch quality. These two machines provide consistent stitches over a variety of fabrics. If you ask me to pick an affordable advanced sewing machine, I will pick any one of these two machines. Since they differ a lot in features, I won't make a suggestion. The decision has to be made on an individual level.
