Bernina 215 Review In Detail

Bernina 215 is quality computerized sewing machine. It has some premium features like the
programmable needle up/down. However few more built-in stitches would have been great.

Editor rating

Bernina 215 is a beginners' computerized sewing machine. This machine comes with 11 built-in stitches including a 4-step buttonhole. It has a needle threader which threads the needle in a flash. There is a programmable needle up/down button to program the needle in up or down position. This feature comes really handy while pivoting (works like an extra hand).

The sewing speed can be controlled on Bernina 215, which is a must have for beginner machines. On full throttle, the machine can churn out 900 stitches/minute, which is pretty impressive. Especially when majority of beginner sewing machines cannot go beyond 850 stitches/minute. This lets you sew really fast.

Since Bernina 215 has only 11 built-in stitches, there are direct selection buttons for choosing stitches. You can view all the stitch settings on the LCD display. The display is not huge by any means. It is a monochromatic one. The screen displays the stitch number, stitch width and length, needle position and recommended presser foot.

The work light LED is reasonably good. A manual thread cutter is also provided. Stitch width and length and needle positions are adjustable (using 3 sets of arrow buttons on the right of the screen). One unique thing about Bernina 215 is that, you can have custom skins for this machine. You can select your favorite skins from Bernina Design Skins website. Even though the skins have nothing to do with the overall performance of the machine, a change in looks is always good. Even better thing is that you can use your own photos which will be printed on a vinyl skin which will then be applied to the machine body.

Ease of Use

The build quality of Bernina 215 is top notch. It is not a cheap plastic sewing machine. This has more metal parts than what you generally see on a beginner sewing machine. Expect this machine to last long, thanks to the wonderful build quality. Since the machine is well built, it can handle all the rough use of a beginner. This is an uncomplicated machine. Threading the machine is quite easy. Since there are direct stitch selection buttons, it is even more easier to figure out which stitch you want to use. The sewing speed is something that we are really impressed with. Even at high speeds, the machine is very stable and it is quiet as well. The stitch quality is also very good. It is a sturdy machine and can easily sew multiple layers of denim with consistent stitch quality. Performance on lightweight fabrics is also good. The machine has all the essential stitches but lacks in decorative stitches.

Drawbacks

No 1-step buttonhole. Bernina could have included a 1-step buttonhole instead of the 4-step one. We are not saying that 4-step buttonhole is bad, just that you need to go through extra 3 steps to finish the buttonhole, compared to 1-step one.

No top drop-in bobbin. An easy to load drop-in bobbin is the trend nowadays. Some people still love the front loading one though.

Few more decorative stitches would have been great.
