Who is a legend? The dictionary says "an extremely famous or notorious person, especially in a particular field". If that is how you describe a legend, then Brother CS6000i is a legend. Whenever you search for a beginner sewing machine, CS6000i will always be on top. The machine did not earn its name overnight. Years and years of consistent performance and user trust made it a huge success. Enough of the praises, now let us focus on the legendary machine itself, the mighty Brother CS6000i.

The best thing about CS6000i was that it offered advanced features like programmable needle up/down, sewing start/stop, speed control, 1-step buttonhole, automatic needle threader and top drop-in bobin at a time when those features were only available in highly advanced sewing machines. The machine has 60 built-in stitches which include 20 decorative stitches, 20 stitches for garment construction, 7 quilting stitches, 6 heirloom stitches and 7 one-step buttonholes. This offers quite a lot of stitch variety. Stitches can be selected by means of push buttons, which then can be viewed on the LCD display. The screen displays stitch number, stitch settings (length and width) and the recommended presser foot. The stitch width and length are adjustable to a maximum of 7mm and 5mm respectively.

Independent bobbin winding motor makes bobbin winding a breeze. The numbered thread diagram and the automatic needle threader makes threading an easy job. The oversized table gives you an option to do larger quilts. 2 LED bulbs illuminate the work space quite well. For sewing cuffs and sleeves, you can always make use of the free arm feature. Another good thing about Brother CS6000i is that it has an all round accessory package. Beginners will love the walking foot, quilting foot and the quilting guide. The accessories complement the features available on this machine. The machine weighs just 13 lbs, which means you can easily carry it to sewing classes.

Brother CS6000i's motor is capable of sewing at a maximum speed of 850 stitches/min. The speed is quite good for a beginners' machine. For free-motion quilting, you can always drop the feed dogs. The built-in in accessory storage compartment is a nice addition. The machine has 25 year limited warranty.

Ease of Use

To be honest, ease of use is one of the highlights of this sewing machine. The included user manual is very helpful in this regard. Initial set up and threading is a breeze. The stitch quality is great, even on multiple layers of thick fabrics like denim. The machine doesn't struggle with multiple layers like other beginner machines do. Where Brother CS6000i excels is in detailing (it comes out almost perfect). Ability to sew without the foot pedal is great for beginners. However beginners are advised to go slow in the beginning for better results. The machine is very quiet even at high speeds.

Drawbacks

Brother could have come up with a 7-piece feed dog for better feed, instead it comes with 6. However it doesn't affect the stitch quality one bit.

Presser foot pressure adjustment is not possible.

Pros

  • Quiet
  • User friendly
  • Portable
  • Excellent stitch quality
  • Variety of features

Cons

  • No presser foot pressure adjustment
  • No 7-piece feed dog
