Brother DreamWeaver VQ3000 Review In Detail

Brother DreamWeaver VQ3000 is absolutely feature packed. Yet it is very easy to operate. Not a lot of learning curve is required. The quality is top notch.

Brother DreamWeaver VQ3000 is an absolute monster. It is the top of the line sewing machine from Brother. Currently, this is also one of the largest Brother sewing and quilting machine in terms of work space (accounts to 5" x 11.25" work space). You can expand the work space further with the help of extension table (just imagine the kind of sewing space you can get).

Brother DreamWeaver VQ3000 comes with 561 sewing stitches but 30 of them comes in a CD. So you will be getting 531 built-in stitches which includes 14 one-step buttonholes. It has 6 fonts for monogramming. VQ3000 has one of the largest LCD displays in the segment (it occupies most of the real estate space). The LCD screen is of size 3.6" x 6". Apart from the standard physical buttons, every other control is in the touch screen (even a clock is there). Help tutorials can also be viewed on the screen.

The maximum stitch width available on the machine is 7mm and stitch length is 5mm. The automatic needle threader and thread cutter saves valuable time. There is an independent bobbin winding motor for winding the bobbin while sewing. Top drop-in bobbin with clear cover makes it easy to change the bobbin. Programmable needle up/down feature is handy while quilting. The machine also comes with an 'Automatic Height Adjuster' feature (AHA) which automatically adjusts the height of the presser foot when the thickness of the fabric changes in the middle of sewing.

Presser foot pressure can be manually adjusted. Another unique feature of Brother VQ3000 is the MuVit Digital Dual Feed, which is basically a motor driven feet. MuVit feed's motor drives the top feed mechanism at a different speed than the feed dogs. The speed can be adjusted on the touch screen. Fabric combination sewing is made easier with MuVit Digital Dual Feed. Even more useful thing is that the speed settings can be saved on machine memory for later use. You can even switch off and on the MuVit system with a lever on side of the attachment.

You can sew on VQ3000 without the foot pedal, by using the speed control slider and the sewing start/stop button. Even then, the machine comes with 2 foot pedals, which is multi-functional than your regular foot pedal. Larger foot pedal is for regular sewing tasks and the smaller one is for cutting the thread (there is already a physical button and a touch button for cutting thread). The smaller pedal enables you to cut the thread without taking your hands off the fabric. The larger pedal can be used to sew forward and reverse (press on the heel part) and to set the needle position. The machine also comes with a knee lifter.

The 'Sew Straight' laser on VQ3000 is not a marketing gimmick. It is really handy while sewing straight lines, so much so that you would wonder how you have sewn without it. The laser guide comes to your rescue while diagonal sewing, quilting, piecing etc. It's position of the laser beam can be adjusted in 0.5mm increments in 14mm area on either side of the foot. Even more easier method is to use the V-Sonic Pen Pal, with the pen you just need to touch the fabric area where you want the laser beam to be. The beam brightness is also adjustable.

The machine has USB connectivity and memory card slot. Software updates can be easily installed, thanks to the USB port.  Brother VQ3000 is very well lit, in fact it has one of the best work lights of all Brother sewing machines. The light has brightness settings up to 5 levels. Even at the third level, the light seems adequate. There is drop feed option for free-motion quilting. The machine is pretty heavy and it weighs around 49.6 pounds (which is a testimony to its build quality). The machine does come with a wheeled tote for portability.

Ease of Use

The user manual is well detailed and everything you need is explained in simple words. Even though the machine has so many bells and whistles, it is very user-friendly. On-screen tutorials help to acquaint with the machine (Even a 70 yr old person can use this machine). The best thing about DreamWeaver VQ3000 is that, there is something new to learn every time you sew (it has that many features). The machine operates very quietly as well.

Your favorite stitches can be stored in the machine memory for quick retrieval. You can create your own stitches using the 'Custom Stitch' feature. The 7-point feed system of VQ3000 is one of the best in the industry. It feeds the fabric evenly. The machine has a powerful motor (1,050 stitches per minute) which reflects in its performance. We have tested the machine with 12 layers of denim and it sew through beautifully without any change in stitch quality. It is very consistent in terms of stitch quality. It is the same as if you were stitching on a single layer. The machine really impressed us in the stitch quality department (Stitch quality alone is worth the money you are spending on this machine, forget the features). Stitches are of top professional quality.

The laser guide, MuVit foot and twin foot pedal makes a hell of a lot of difference in the overall quality of the quilts. These are highly advanced technology, yet they are very user-friendly. Another good thing about Brother DreamWeaver VQ3000 is that it has a large work space. You can easily do King size quilts (forget queens and laps).

Review Verdict

What impressed us the most was the ease of use. Brother DreamWeaver VQ3000 being an advanced sewing machine, we thought it will have a sizeable learning curve but it really surprised us. The ease of use makes you sew more and more. It is an absolute fun machine to have. It is worth every penny. This machine is right up there with the best sewing machines we have ever reviewed.
