Brother LX3817 Review In Detail

Brother LX3817 is a quality machine for beginners with good variety of stitches. It is a value for money option for sewers. But it doesn't have an automatic needle threader.

Editor rating

Brother has so many sewing machines in the entry level category and Brother LX3817 is one among them. This machine is ideal for starters and moderately experienced sewers. LX3817 comes with 17 built-in stitches which include straight, zigzag, decorative, blind hem, 4-step buttonhole stitch etc. Top drop-in bobbin is a beginner friendly feature and that too with a clear cover to monitor thread supply.

The stitch selector dial has all the pattern numbers. Easy to access free arm is there for sewing cuffs and sleeves. The automatic bobbin winder makes life a lot easier. Reverse sewing lever is of decent size and easy to engage. The maximum sewing speed available on Brother LX3817 is 850 stitches/minute, which keeps it on par with even some of the well known computerized sewing machines in terms of sewing speed.

LX3817 is a very lightweight sewing machine, making it an ideal companion for sewing classes. It weighs just 10.36 lbs. LED worklight is really handy while sewing in the dark and it is bright enough. Two manual thread cutters are available on the machine, one near the bobbin area and the other one is the side thread cutter.

Ease of Use

Setting up the machine is very easy and same is the case with threading (I will come back to threading in the drawbacks section). In the box, you will get an instructional CD, but I think using a CD is kind of old fashioned. You can get all the information and support videos on Brother website itself. The variety of stitches on offer is quite good. Basically you would get almost all types of stitches you normally expect from an entry level sewing machine.

Brother LX3817 can sew denim without much difficulty, one thing is that you need to use the right needle (couple of layers won't be an issue at all). The stitch quality across a variety of fabrics is quite good. The stitch length and width are preset, so you don't need to adjust them every time. The machine is quiet and very stable.

There is no automatic needle threader to thread the needle eye. So you will have to do it manually, which may not be ideal for the elderly with poor eyesight.

I know it is kind of asking too much, but a 1-step buttonhole instead of 4-step buttonhole would have made it a perfect machine for me.

  • Good variety of stitches
  • Lightweight
  • Portable
  • Value for money

  • No automatic needle threader

Review Verdict

Brother LX3817 is an ideal sewing machine for everyday sewing. I am satisfied with what it brings to the table.
