Brother SE600 Review In Detail

Brother SE600 is a quality sewing and embroidery machine. It is loaded with features. It has a perfect balance between sewing and embroidery features. It is a complete package in my opinion.

Editor rating

I always loved Brother's 'SE' series of sewing and embroidery combo machines. They bring the goodies of both worlds, sewing and embroidery. The reason why this series became so popular with sewers was because those machines had a wonderful balance of sewing and embroidery features. It is not like, the machine has too many embroidery features and less of sewing type or vice versa. It was never the case, Brother's combo machines always had the right balance between sewing and embroidery features. Of all the combo machines that Brother has rolled out, my personal favorite is Brother SE1800.

Enough of the boring introduction, now let us focus on the machine on our hands, the Brother SE600. This is a relatively new model and it is definitely more feature packed than the ever popular SE400. As I have said earlier, Brother SE600 is a sewing and embroidery combo machine. It can do both regular sewing and embroidery, so practically you are getting two machines rolled into one, that is why they call it 2 in 1 machine.

Regular Sewing Features

As far as regular sewing is concerned, Brother SE600 comes with 103 built-in sewing stitches which include a wide variety of utility and decorative stitches. It also include 10 one-step buttonhole styles. The automatic needle threader threads the needle in a snap. The top drop-in bobbin makes bobbin changing effortless. The maximum stitch width and length is 7mm and 5mm respectively. Sewing start/stop button and speed control slider lets you sew without using the foot pedal. The programmable needle up/down button is really handy while pivoting especially when you are working with fabrics that can slip out of your hands quickly.

The presser foot pressure is automatic. As a professional, I would have loved it to be manual, but it is not a 'must have' feature for me. The machine is free arm convertible for sewing cylindrical projects. Drop feed switch is provided for doing free-motion works. Another premium feature is the automatic thread cutter, which can cut both upper and bobbin thread on the press of a button. This is in addition to the manual thread cutter on the side. Brother SE600 can sew regular stitches at a maximum speed of 710 stitches/min. The 7-point feed dogs ensure consistent feeding.

Embroidery Features

The maximum embroidery area available on Brother SE600 is 4" x 4". Now this area is the same as that of SE400, which I felt could have been increased. 4" x 4" hoop comes included with the machine. 80 embroidery designs are built-in. You can also import the designs of your choice from the internet, thanks to the USB port. 6 embroidery lettering fonts are available on the machine. The best thing I loved about SE600 is its LCD screen. The large 3.2" color touch screen is one of the best in the segment, if not the best. You can clearly view the selected design and that too in color. The screen displays quite a lot of information, which might be difficult to digest in the beginning, which is why reading the user manual thoroughly becomes an important aspect to get through the learning curve.

The option to plug in USB stick directly into the machine is a huge blessing, which I always missed on my SE400 (SE400 needed to be connected to the computer via USB cable, on SE600 you can plug in the USB stick directly). Brother SE600 has built-in memory to store your customized patterns. You also have the option to store them in the USB stick. SE600 can embroider at a maximum speed of 400 stitches/min.

Other Details

There is a built-in accessory storage compartment. SE600 weighs 14.33 lbs which is neither light nor heavy, it is somewhere in between. The machine comes with 25 year limited warranty.

Ease of Use

The stitch quality is something that you will admire on Brother SE600. I really loved the quality and crispiness of letters. The machine is easy to thread. It is a beginner friendly machine, except for the fact that there is a slight learning curve to understand the full functionality of the LCD screen. I have tried this machine with a variety of fabrics and it performed quite well. As far as thick fabrics are concerned, I have sewn multiple layers of denim with ease. The key while sewing multiple layers of denim is that, you need to use the right needle. The stitch quality on lightweight fabrics is also quite good.

I always felt the maximum embroidery area of 4" x 4" is a bit small for professionals.

•    Excellent stitch quality
•    Color LCD touch screen
•    Good variety of features

•    Slightly small embroidery area

Review Verdict
