Chicago based EverSewn now has few good sewing machines under their product catalog. One of the eye catching model of theirs is the Sparrow 25. It is a cute looking sewing machine with a lot of features. EverSewn Sparrow 25 is a computerized sewing machine with 197 built-in stitches which include
• 7 One-step buttonholes, 1 Eyelet stitch (useful for making belt holes and stuffs)
• 14 Utility stitches
• 2 Darning stitches
• 58 Decorative stitches
• 18 Quilting stitches
• 1 font which has 97 patterns including uppercase, lowercase, numbers and few symbols
The stitch chart is provided on the bottom of the machine, which you need to pull out. The chart puller kind of sticks out of the machine, which I personally feel is a bit out of proportion. Sparrow 25 comes with sewing start/stop button and speed control slider to sew without the foot pedal. The machine can sew at a maximum speed of 850 stitches/min.
The reverse button, auto lock button and needle up/down are all conveniently located. I am happy that EverSewn has provided a dedicated locking stitch button which is definitely a premium feature. Bobbin is top drop-in type and there is an automatic needle threader to save eye strain. The maximum stitch width and length available on Sparrow 25 is 7mm and 4.5mm respectively.
The backlit LCD display is of good size and it is easy to read. Another good thing is that, there are direct stitch selection buttons for most commonly used utility stitches. There is a mirror button to sew mirror image of patterns (00-14 and 25-99 stitches can be mirror imaged).
Sparrow 25 comes with built-in memory to store pattern combinations. To adjust the tension, dial is provided on top of the machine. However, the presser foot pressure has no adjustment option. A manual thread cutter is also provided.
EverSewn Sparrow 25 has a good work light which illuminates the work space quite well. For sewing multiple layers, the presser foot can be lifted one stage up than the normal lift (they call it two-step presser foot lifter). Drop feed dog option can be used for free-motion works. The machine can be used for free-arm sewing as well.
Ease of Use
The machine is easy to set up. I recommend reading the user manual before you start setting up. As I have said earlier, there is a good variety of stitches to choose from. I am really impressed with the stitch quality. They look beautiful, very crisp and clear.
The machine is quieter than most machines. Sparrow 25 is a lightweight machine, so if you plan to attend sewing classes, you won't have any trouble carrying it. The build quality is also very good. The machine is stable even at high speeds, no worries there.
Drawbacks
One thing I missed on Sparrow 25 is an automatic thread cutter. But like most machines, it has a manual one. So it won't be a deal breaker for me.
Pros
• Feature packed
• Stitch quality
• Build quality
• Lightweight
Cons
• No automatic thread cutter
Review Verdict
The great variety of features makes it very much appealing. It has the stitch quality to go with it. In my opinion, EverSewn Sparrow 25 has all departments covered. While doing every project, job satisfaction is something that I always strive for and this machine gave me plenty of that.
