Janome 8002D Review In Detail

Janome 8002D is a little workhorse. Stitch quality is one of its main hallmarks. It is a great starter machine, but it misses out on free arm though.

Editor rating

Janome 8002D is one of the best entry level sergers from Janome. It has been well received in US. It is 3 and 4 thread convertible. The threading chart is color coded to make threading easy (it may not be that easy for beginners, so color coding really helps). You will be better of watching a YouTube video or instructional DVD before threading it.

The differential feed mechanism ensures consistent results. You can really fine tune differential feed and get very good results on a variety of fabrics. It can be adjusted from 0.5mm to 2.25mm. Quick change rolled hem will be one feature that most people will be looking for and Janome 8002D has it. The best part is that, you can convert to rolled hem without removing the needle plate. How cool is that ? This machine can sew at a speed of 1,300 stitches/min, which is pretty much the standard for home sergers nowadays.

Janome 8002D machine weighs 13.4 lbs. So it definitely qualifies as a portable serger. It has an easily retractable upper knife to prevent fabric edge cutting. The stitch length is adjustable in the range 1mm - 4mm. The cutting width is adjustable from 3.1mm - 7.3mm. Presser foot pressure is adjustable as well. The work light illuminates the needle area reasonably well. The machine comes with 25 year limited warranty as well.

Ease of Use

You will be better of trying it with some scrap material initially to get used to the working of the machine. The included DVD is great help for threading. Watch it at least a couple of times before trying your hand. The machine comes pre-threaded with white thread. 8002D is small and does not occupy a lot of space. The lightweight construction also makes it easy to move around.

Janome 8002D  is a reasonably quiet machine and this machine never woke up my kids. I am really impressed with the stitch quality this serger can offer. I have tried denim and some lightweight leather and it worked seamlessly. The performance over multiple layers is also good, provided you are using the right needle.

The machine operates smoothly. The foot pedal is very responsive and it is very easy to control the speed. You can have full control over this machine. As a beginner, it gives a lot of confidence and you will feel more creative. It is sturdy as well.

Drawbacks
