Janome MOD-100 Review In Detail

Janome MOD-100 has all the quality you can expect from Janome. It has excellent stitch quality, the only thing missing is the monogramming font.

Editor rating

Janome released MOD series of sewing machines in the first quarter of 2016. There are 7 sewing machines in the MOD series which basically differ from each other in the number of built-in stitches. For the last couple of years, Janome has been steadily increasing their range of products. The good news is that, new machines they release is doing pretty well in the market. Janome is now offering feature packed sewing machines at affordable prices.  MOD series is one such attempt. Janome is well known for making sturdy mechanical sewing machines (HD3000 for example). Recently they have been making some quality computerized sewing machines as well. One thing you can always bet on Janome is the build quality. They rarely use cheap plastics. Now let us focus on the machine on our hands, the all new Janome MOD-100.

Janome MOD-100 is a computerized sewing machine with 100 built-in stitches (evident from the '100' in the model number) including 7 one-step buttonholes. One limitation of Janome machines in the past was that they didn't offer a lot of buttonhole stitches. There will be no such complaint with MOD-100 as it has 7 of them. The LCD display is back lit and is of reasonable size. You won't have much difficulty reading them. The display shows the selected stitch, stitch settings and the recommended presser foot. The maximum stitch width is 7mm and stitch length is 5mm. The automatic needle threader will thread the needle for you.

The sewing start/stop button and speed control slider lets you sew without using the foot pedal. Locking stitch button lets you secure the stitches, which prevents unraveling. The programmable needle up/down button can be used to set the position of the needle. This is a must have for quilters. The reverse sewing button is placed above the start/stop button. You can sew cuffs and sleeves by removing the storage attachment. You can also drop the feed dogs for free-motion quilting. The bobbin is top drop-in with a clear cover (much more beginner friendly than front loading one).

7-piece feed dog system on Janome MOD-100 ensures even feeding. The machine has a reasonably powerful motor capable of delivering 820 stitches/min. The work space accounts to W6.7" x H4.3". Janome MOD-100 is incredibly light, it just weighs 12.7 pounds.  The machine comes with an included dust cover as well.

Ease of Use

Setting up the machine is nice and easy. The bright and large LCD screen is a real boon for elderly people. The variety of stitches are quite good. MOD-100 is a quiet operator, it won't disturb your sleeping kid. The lightweight structure enables you to take it to sewing classes. The machine may be lightweight but it is not made of cheap plastic (it is hard plastic). The LED work light is reasonably good. The stitch quality is consistent across lightweight and thick fabrics. We have tested it with 6 layers of denim and it stitched beautifully. The buttonhole stitches are also good.
