Janome MOD-30 Review In Detail

Beginners will love Janome MOD-30 for its sheer quality. It has a premium look. However few more built-in stitches would have been great.

Editor rating

MOD-30 is one among 7 'MOD' series sewing machines rolled out by Janome in 2016. As the model number suggests, Janome MOD-30 comes with 30 built-in stitches including 3 one-step buttonholes. This is a computerized sewing machine targeted at beginners. The built-in automatic needle threader will thread the eye of the needle for you.

Janome MOD-30 comes with a sewing start/stop button and speed control slider to control the sewing speed. It also lets you sew without the foot pedal. Normally, beginners will get better results at slow speeds and the slowest speed setting of this machine is really slow (which really helps to get right stitch quality even in the first attempt). The motor is capable of delivering a maximum of 820 stitches/min.

Changing bobbin is easy as it comes with a user-friendly top drop-in bobbin, that too with a clear cover to monitor the thread supply. Janome MOD-30 also comes with a programmable needle up/down button with which you can program the needle to stop in the up or down position at the end of the seam (this is very handy while pivoting). In order to lock the stitches at the beginning and end, you can use the locking stitch button. Reverse sewing button is placed just above the start/stop button.

When you select a stitch on Janome MOD-30, the LCD screen displays the stitch number, stitch width and length, the recommended presser foot. The stitch width and length are set for optimal results, but you can override them using the '-' and '+' buttons below the screen. The maximum stitch width is 7mm and stitch length is 5mm. In most machines, the stitch chart is displayed under the top lid, which needs to be opened to get the stitch number, not MOD-30. The stitch number chart is displayed right in front of the machine, which is very convenient.

There is a removable storage compartment to store your standard accessories. Upon removal, it gives access to free arm for sewing cuffs and sleeves. You can also drop the feed dogs for doing free-motion quilting. 7-piece feed dog ensures better feed than older machines. Thread tension is manual. Auto-declutch bobbin winder is also there. What this does is that, the machine will stop winding the bobbin when it senses that the bobbin is full. It is a nice feature to have. There is an extra high presser foot lifter to offer extra clearance while sewing bulky fabrics.

The work space of Janome MOD-30 measures to W6.7" x H 4.3", which is better than most competitors. The machine weighs just 12.7 lbs. So you can clearly say that this is a lightweight sewing machine. You can easily take it to sewing classes. Janome MOD-30 comes with an included dust cover.

Ease of Use

The user manual is great. It is well detailed with lot of pictures and illustrations (a good user manual is the first thing a beginner needs and we felt a sigh of relief after reading the manual). The machine has a premium look to it. The machine is much quieter than most machines in the market. Though the variety of stitches are good, we wanted more. The large work space is something we really liked. A beginner will find the work space more than enough. Threading is easy and fun. The stitches come out clean and consistent. The machine performs well on multiple layers of denim.

Drawbacks

There is no font for basic monogramming.
