Janome MOD-50 Review In Detail

Janome MOD-50 has almost all the features you look for in this segment. It also scores high on ease of use. The stitch quality is also very good. A font for monogramming is one thing I missed.

Editor rating

At the time of writing this post, Janome has 8 machines in the MOD series (7 sewing machines + 1 serger). MOD-50 is one of their mid range models. We have already reviewed other models like MOD-100, MOD-30, MOD-15 etc. Now it is time for us to have a look at MOD-50. As the model number suggests, MOD-50 comes with 50 built-in stitches including 3 one-step buttonholes. The stitches are printed in front of the machine itself, so that you don't need to look at the manual or somewhere else.

Janome MOD-50 has top drop-in bobbin which makes life a lot easier for a sewer and that too with a clear cover, so that you can always keep an eye on the bobbin thread supply. A dial is provided in front to adjust the tension. The automatic needle threader saves a lot of eye strain. The programmable needle up/down button is really handy while pivoting. MOD-50 can be converted to free arm sewing by removing the little accessory storage compartment. There is a drop feed lever which enables you to do some free-motion works.

Janome MOD-50 being a computerized sewing machine, you can sew without using the foot pedal, thanks to the sewing start/stop button and speed control slider. The speed control slider also doubles up as a maximum speed limiter while using the foot pedal. One point to note is that, you will not be able to use the sewing start/stop button when the foot pedal is connected. Locking stitch button is another premium feature that comes with MOD-50. The locking stitch secures the stitch at the end. The locking stitch button on MOD-50 is in addition to the usual reverse sewing button.

One of the many things I loved about Janome MOD-50 is the crisp and clear LCD screen. The screen is big and easy to read even for the elderly.  Pattern selection is very easy once you do it couple of times. You need to press the mode button and then input the pattern number. Similarly you can adjust the selected stitch width and length. The maximum stitch width is 7mm and stitch length is 5mm. MOD-50 is one of the lightest machines around, weighing just 12.7 lbs. So you can easily carry it to sewing classes. A work light illuminates the work space quite well.

Ease of Use

First of all, the build quality of Janome MOD-50 is quite good. It has a premium finish to it. It is beginner friendly as well. The user manual is well detailed and you can easily figure out the buttons and controls. MOD-50 is not an entry level machine, it is not a very advanced machine either. But it strikes a perfect balance between beginner friendly and advanced features. That is exactly where MOD-50 makes all the difference. It has almost all the features you look for, in this segment.

On the performance side, I am very much impressed with this machine. Though on the lighter side, the machine is stable at high speeds. The variety of stitches are quite good. The stitch quality is also very good (no complaints on that part). The work space of W 6.7" x H 4.3", will be good enough for most home projects.

Drawbacks

There isn't a lot to talk about in this section. But one thing I missed was a font for basic monogramming.

Pros

•    Good build quality
•    Lot of features
•    Good stitch quality

Cons

•    No font for monogramming

Review Verdict

In my opinion, Janome MOD-50 is a value for money offering. In terms of features, it covers all the important areas and there is good stitch quality to go with it. This makes MOD-50 quite a good offering for both beginners and intermediate sewers alike.
