Singer 1234 Review In Detail

Singer 1234 is an entry level offering from Singer. It is not a machine with lot of bells and whistles, but it serves its purpose. It is a good starter machine.

Editor rating

Beginner sewing machine segment is the most competitive segment in the sewing machine industry. All major players have quite a few models in this segment. Singer Start 1234 is one among them. 1234 is an entry level offering from Singer. I guess the numbers '1234' symbolizes the same. The machine comes with 6 built-in stitch types including Straight, Satin, ZigZag, Blind Hem, Scallop and a 4-Step Buttonhole. Stitches can be selected easily by turning the dial. Stitch width and length are preset, which is pretty useful from the point of view of a beginner as it keeps things simple. However, I wished it had an option to adjust stitch width and length, just to play with it for better customization, never mind.

The bobbin is front loading type. I would have loved to see a top drop-in bobbin instead of a front loading one. So that you don't need to remove the storage compartment every time you need to access the bobbin, never mind. The reverse sewing lever on Singer 1234 is of decent size and it is easy to engage. The machine is free arm convertible as well. Just remove the accessory storage compartment and you can sew cuffs and other tubular areas with ease. Snap-on presser feet makes it easy to change the feet. One good thing about Singer 1234 is that it comes with extra high presser foot lifter which basically offers more clearance to accommodate bulkier fabrics or multiple layers. There is a bobbin winder as well.

Singer 1234 is very lightweight, weighing just 11.4 lbs. Carry handle makes it portable and you can easily carry it to sewing classes. An LED bulb illuminates the work space quite well. A manual thread cutter is provided on the side of the machine. Tension can be adjusted by using the dial. Vertical dual spool pins make twin needle sewing effortless. However, twin needle needs to be purchased separately. Singer 1234 comes with a good package of accessories including 3 presser feet. Included Darning plate can be used to do free-motion works.

Ease of Use

Setting up Singer 1234 is very easy. Even a complete beginner can get started in a matter of minutes. If you have any difficulty, you can always go through 'Online Owner's Class' provided by Singer. The stitch quality is very good over light-medium weight fabrics. If you plan to sew on thick fabrics like denim, make sure you use the appropriate needle and it should work fine. I wouldn't recommend sewing too many layers of very thick fabrics as this machine is not designed for such heavy duty sewing. It is a basic beginner machine and not an industrial machine. The overall build quality of Singer 1234 is quite good and the heavy duty metal frame makes it stable and durable. Singer 1234 can sew at a reasonable speed as well.

The first thing that comes to my mind is that Singer 1234 doesn't have an automatic needle threader. So you will have to thread the needle eye manually.

The other two things that I wished were 1-step buttonhole and top drop-in bobbin. However, these are not features that you can't live without, but still a good addition to have.

•    Easy to set up
•    Good stitch quality
•    Lightweight and portable

•    No automatic needle threader
•    No top drop-in bobbin
•    No 1-step buttonhole

Review Verdict

Overall, I am very much impressed with what Singer 1234 brings to the table. It is definitely not a machine with lot of bells and whistles, but it serves the purpose of a beginner sewer.
