Singer 14J250 Stylist II Serger Review In Detail

Singer 14J250 Stylist II Serger is one of the popular models in US. Its performance over denim is very impressive. However it lacks a free arm.

Editor rating

Singer 14J250 Stylist II is a 2-3-4 thread serger. It is one of the most popular home sergers you can get in US. There are a lot of useful features on this machine. This serger comes with wide open threading system in which the front of the serger opens completely revealing the loops, which makes it very easy to thread. The built-in needle threader comes really handy. You can use the thread cutter by simply pushing the lever. The differential feed system lets you have consistent quality for your seams. Stitch length can be adjusted using a dial and it prevents unnecessary bunching.

There are 4 built-in rolled hems on Singer 14J250 Stylist II serger. You can easily convert the machine to rolled hem with a lever. The adjustable cutting width gauge ensures the fabric is cut and sewn consistently. Tension can be adjusted using a dial. The tension release feature allows threads to pull easily when presser foot is up. Threading system is color-coded for easy threading. The moveable upper knife prevents fabric trimming while sewing.

This machine can sew at a speed of 1300 stitches/minute, which is very good for a serger. The electronic speed control system ensures consistent sewing speed. The extra-high presser foot lifter offers clearance for multiple layers of fabric. There is a lower looper cover for storing away all the accessories.

There are 6 different stitch types available, they are

•    4 Thread Mock Stretch Stitch
•    3 Thread Overlock Stitch
•    3 Thread Mock Stretch Safety Stitch
•    2 Thread Overlock Stitch
•    Rolled Hem Stitches
•    Flatlock Stitch

The machine weighs approximately 13.5lbs and there is a built-in carry handle as well. Being a lightweight machine, it will be a good choice if you want to take it to your sewing classes. This machine comes with a 25 year limited warranty.

Ease of Use

Singer 14J250 Stylist II Serger features among top sergers for a reason. Its performance is quite good. It is a sturdy machine and sews through denim with ease (this is something that I am really impressed with). The stretch mode on this serger is absolutely wonderful. The stretch stitch mode is 3-4 times faster than on a regular sewing machine and it leaves beautiful looking seams. It is a compact machine, not too heavy but heavy enough to prevent any kind of vibration or instability while operating. To me, this is one of the easiest machines to thread, thanks to the wide open threading system. Like most sergers, the machine comes threaded in the box. The user manual is pretty good with all the necessary instructions and details included. I would have loved to have a coverstitch option, but that will be expecting too much from a serger in this segment.

Drawbacks

There is no free arm.

Pros

•    Good performance
•    Sews easily through heavy materials
•    Lightweight and portable
•    Strong motor
•    Wonderful stretch mode

Cons

•    No free arm

Review Verdict

Overall, Singer 14J250 Stylist II Serger is a good home serger. There are no main issues to point out and it deliver results as expected. This will suit those people who are more performance oriented than feature oriented.
