Singer 2277 Review In Detail

Singer 2277 checks all the check boxes as far as a beginner is concerned. Its stitch quality and ability to go through multiple layers is commendable. One thing that it missed out on was a top drop-in bobbin.

Editor rating

Singer 2277 is an entry level beginner sewing machine from Singer. It has almost all the features that you get in a beginners machine. It has a decent number of built-in stitches. It comes with 23 built-in stitches including 6 basic stitches, 11 decorative stitches, 5 stretch stitches and a fully automatic 1-step buttonhole. It is great that Singer has provided 1-step buttonhole on this machine, I have seen some other machines in the same segment that came with a 4-step buttonhole. The machine is pretty lightweight as well. It just weighs around 13.6 lbs.

Once you go through all the features of Singer 2277, you will see that it is packed with a lot of features. Singer projects the automatic needle threader as one of the premium features of this machine. Stitch selection can be made by turning the dial. Separate dials are provided for adjusting the stitch width and length. The extra high presser foot lifter provides more clearance while working with thicker and multiple layers of  fabrics. You can store all the accessories in the on-board storage compartment attachment. The machine can be used for free arm sewing by removing the on-board storage compartment. The tension though automatic, can also be adjusted manually for refined results. The built-in carry handle makes it portable. It comes with 25 year limited warranty as well.

As you can see, Singer 2277 packs quite a lot of features. But it is one thing having all the features and another thing converting them into professional quality stitches. So let us have a look at the ease of use and stitch quality.

Ease of Use

This is a very compact sewing machine. The user manual is pretty clear on instructions. Singer 2277 runs smoothly through thick and thin material. I have tried it with 4 layers of denim and it punched through quite easily (the key is to use the right needle according to the type of fabric). Multiple layers of light-medium weight fabric is a walk in the park for this machine but I don't recommend too many layers of really thick denim. The overall performance of the machine is quite good.

The bobbin is front loading type, which is kind of old fashioned. A top drop-in bobbin would have made it easier for beginners.

No drop feed dog lever. However, you can do free-motion works using the included darning plate, which basically covers the feed dogs.

•    Good variety of features
•    Simple design
•    Affordable

•    No top drop-in bobbin

Review Verdict

Singer 2277 checks almost all the check boxes as far as a beginner is concerned. Its stitch quality and ability to go through multiple layers is commendable. In my opinion, the only thing that it missed out on was a top drop-in bobbin.
