Singer 3223R Review In Detail

Singer 3223R is a good looking, good quality beginner sewing machine. It checks most check boxes as far as a beginner is concerned.

Editor rating

Singer 3223R is an entry level offering from Singer. It belongs to the 'Simple' series of sewing machines from Singer. It is a beautiful looking sewing machine. The most eye-catching thing is its wonderful raspberry color (couple of other color options are also available with different model numbers such as the 3223G Aqua and 3223Y Yellow). Raspberry color is a color which women love, isn't it? Digging deep into 3223R's features, you will find 23 built-in stitches. You will get a good variety of built-in stitches including basic, stretch and decorative stitches. It has a four-step buttonhole for sewing beautiful buttonholes. Bobbin is front loading type, I would have preferred to have a top drop-in one though (anyway we will get back to that later). Stitch patterns can be selected by turning the dial provided in front of the machine (the dial is sturdy). Stitch length is also adjustable by dial.

The reverse sewing lever is easy to engage as it is of decent size. The extra high presser foot lifter gives you the luxury of sewing thick or multiple layers of fabrics. A manual thread cutter is provided on the side of the machine for easy thread cutting. The accessory storage compartment is spacious enough to store most of your accessories. A small work light is provided for convenience, even though the light illuminates the needle area well, I would rather prefer external lighting. Free arm sewing is easy as you just need to remove the accessory compartment. Singer 3223R weighs 12.2 lbs, which is lightweight and the carry handle makes it very much portable. Included soft cover helps to keep the dust away.

Ease of Use

The build quality of Singer 3223R is quite good. Threading Singer 3223R is very easy, you just need to follow the guides. Stitch quality is also very good. While sewing thick fabrics like denim, make sure that you use the right needle and the right stitch settings. Sewing slowly while using thick fabrics may bring better results. For the best sewing experience, you might have to tweak the tension a bit, just to get that perfect finish for the pattern you choose. The machine is very user-friendly, beginners can figure out things rather quickly. You don’t need any prior sewing experience to use this machine. It is that simple (perhaps that may be the reason why Singer named it ‘Simple’).

It misses out on an automatic needle threader, which would have been really handy for people with poor eyesight.

I would have loved to have a top drop-in bobbin and a one-step buttonhole, however those are not deal breakers for me.

Review Verdict

Singer 3223R might not have a lot of bells and whistles, but beginners will find it very user friendly. It has a nice variety of stitches to choose from and has good stitch quality.
