Singer 4432 Review In Detail

Singer 4432 may not be 100% perfect, but it is definitely a quality beginners' machine to consider. Powerful motor is its USP.

Editor rating

Singer 4432 has been quite popular in US. It made its name for affordability and quality. It is not that behind in features either. You can call it an all-rounder, which is why it became a beginners' favorite. The thing that made 4432 this famous is, it is a heavy duty sewing machine. Singer's 44 series has a variety of sewing machines that mainly differ in terms of built-in stitches. 4432 is one of the top specced models in the 44 series.

Singer 4432 comes with 32 built-in stitches which is pretty evident from the '32' in the model number. The built-in stitches include 6 Basic Stitches, 7 Stretch Stitches, 18 Decorative Stitches and a 1-step buttonhole. There is an automatic needle threader to save eye strain (the machine will thread the needle for you). Another user-friendly feature is the top drop-in bobbin with clear cover. The clear cover allows you to see how much bobbin thread is remaining. The machine also comes with an easy to change snap-on presser feet.

Singer 4432 is a heavy duty mechanical sewing machine. So the stitch selection is always done by using dials (unlike the buttons or touch screen on a computerized sewing machine). Separate dials are there for stitch selection and stitch length adjustment. Even though the built-in stitch settings are set for optimal results, you can always override them for customization. The maximum stitch width available on this machine is 6mm.

For reverse sewing, there is a conveniently located lever. Needle position can be changed as it comes with 3 positions. The most discussed feature of Singer 4432 is its motor power. According to Singer, the motor is 60% stronger than other standard sewing machines. The motor under the hood can deliver a whopping 1,100 stitches/min (that's serger type power to be honest). As far as an entry level beginner machine is considered, this kind of sewing power is unheard of, which is why it is an ideal machine for sewing multiple layers of thick fabrics.

Even with such power, the machine doesn't vibrate at high speeds, thanks to the heavy duty metal frame that supports the whole structure. You can store all the accessories in a small storage compartment, which on removal gives access to free arm. Extra high presser foot lifter provides the additional clearance you need, especially when dealing with multiple layers of fabrics.

Ease of Use

Singer 4432 has all the features that a beginner looks for. As far as stitch quality is concerned, it is pretty good. Performance justifies its power. Up to 6 layers of denim will be a walk in the park, provided you use the right kind of needle (heavy duty needle). I won't try this machine with 8 plus layers as it will be asking too much from a beginners' machine. Starting at slow speed will bring better results. If you want to sew really fast, this machine can do that as well. Variety of stitches are also quite good compared to competition. Even though this is a heavy duty model, it just weighs 15 lbs. So portability won't be an issue at all.

No machine is 100% perfect. Same is the case with Singer 4432. The user manual could do with more detailed instructions. However, you can always watch YouTube videos to understand the operation and set up.

The word 'Heavy Duty' doesn't mean that this machine is all metal. There are some unavoidable plastic parts. However, all interior parts are metal. The build quality is quite good as well.

The foot pedal is very sensitive to any input. It is like the accelerator pedal of those racing cars. So speed control might require some practice.

•    User friendly
•    Strong motor
•    Excellent stitch quality

•    User manual could be better
•    Not all metal machine
