Singer 6180 Review In Detail

Singer 6180 has a good variety of features and stitches. The stitch quality is also good, but it misses out on drop-in bobbin and drop feed dog lever.

Editor rating

Singer 6180 is an electronic or partly computerized sewing machine. This machine belongs to the 'Brilliance' series of sewing machines rolled out by Singer. 6180 has 80 built-in stitches. The built-in stitches include 8 Basic, 58 Decorative, 8 Stretch and 6 one-step Buttonhole stitches. You can call Singer 6180, partly computerized because a fully computerized sewing machine will have a sewing start/stop button and speed control slider for sewing without the foot pedal, which this machine lacks. Singer 7258 is a good example for a fully computerized sewing machine. Singer 6180 has push buttons for stitch selection and you can view the selected stitch and its settings on the LCD screen (the display is not backlit but it is easy to read). Automatic stitch settings can be overridden for customization. 6.5mm is the maximum stitch width that can be attained on this machine. 6180 has an uncomplicated design to be honest, not a lot of buttons and levers are there.

Singer 6180 has an automatic needle threader for easy needle threading. The extra clearance provided by extra-high presser foot lifter is always handy while working on multiple layers of fabrics. The presser foot pressure on this machine is set automatically. Automatic tension ensures consistent stitch quality (tension adjustment dial is provided in front of the machine). The automatic reverse button can be used for reverse and reinforce stitching. 6180 has 13 needle positions. The maximum sewing speed that can be attained is 750 stitches/min. The machine is free arm capable as well. It has  a 25 year limited warranty cover.

Ease of Use

Singer 6180 is easy to use. As I have already said, it is a simple machine with even simpler design. The variety of stitches on-board is good enough for a beginner. The automatic tension seems to come out perfect for each type of stitch. The machine works fine on thick fabrics like denim as long as you use heavy duty needle for it.

Drawbacks

No top drop-in bobbin. When most modern beginner sewing machines come with top drop-in bobbin, Singer 6180 has a front loading bobbin, which makes it slightly difficult to change the bobbin, especially when you compare it with drop-in bobbin machines like Singer 7258.

No drop feed lever to drop feed dogs. However, you will get an included darning plate for doing free-motion works.

Pros

•    Smooth operation
•    Easy to use
•    Works well on denim

Cons

•    No top drop-in bobbin
•    No drop feed dog lever

Review Verdict

Singer 6180 will be a good choice for a beginner to intermediate sewer.
