Whenever you search for a beginner sewing machine, Singer 7258 is bound to catch your eye. This is mainly because of its quality and affordability. It even won Consumers Digest Best Buy Award two times, which on its own is a testimony to its quality and popularity.
Singer 7258 is a computerized sewing machine. It comes with 100 built-in stitches which includes 9 Basic, 8 Stretch, 76 Decorative and 7 One-step Buttonholes. It has an easy to load, top drop-in bobbin with clear cover, which makes it easy to monitor the thread supply. The machine being computerized, comes with a sewing start/stop and speed control slider to sew without the foot pedal. The maximum sewing speed is 750 stitches/min.
There is automatic bobbin winding and auto tie off function. The stitch width and length are set for optimal results but there is an override option. 6mm is the maximum stitch width. The needle up-down feature is a blessing for quilters. This may not sound like a big thing, but you will know the difference once you get used to it. Just imagine yourself having an extra hand, that's how it feels.
Singer 7258 comes with twin needle and 13 needle positions. There is a built-in storage compartment. The automatic needle threader saves eyestrain. An LED bulb illuminates the workspace. Singer Stylist 7258 has 25 year limited warranty.
Ease of Use
First of all Singer 7258 comes with a detailed instruction manual, which is very easy to understand. All the stitches and controls are well detailed. The included DVD is even more helpful. The variety of stitches are absolutely great. There is enough room for creativity. Threading is very easy, Singer says you can do it in 6 seconds. Even if you don't manage to do it in 6 seconds, it will be pretty close.
The machine is very quiet and smooth. It doesn't vibrate at high speeds. The stitch quality is excellent over a variety of fabrics. Beginners and intermediate sewers will find this machine handy. It has that many features.
Drawbacks
Even though the foot pedal response is pretty good, we felt it could be bit more responsive to inputs. The fact that you can use Singer 7258 without the foot pedal almost eliminates that concern.
Unfortunately SInger 7258 misses out on a lever to drop feed dogs for free-motion stitching.
Pros
• Excellent stitch quality
• Variety of features and stitches
• Easy to thread and use
Cons
• No drop feed
