Singer 9970 Review

Singer 9970 Review In Detail

Singer 9970 is a quality sewing machine which has quite a lot of features. It is a great performer, but availability is a question mark.

Editor rating

Singer 9970 is a feature packed computerized sewing machine. The machine comes with a whopping 600 built-in stitches including 13 one-step buttonholes. One thing we can assure you is that, you are going to get a lot of decorative stitches, which you might not even get time to try. There are so many of them. The stitch chart is located on the upper lid.

Singer 9970 comes with Singer's 6 second threading system. Threading instructions are printed on the machine, coupled with an automatic needle threader to save time. The top drop-in bobbin with clear cover is really convenient. There is an automatic thread cutter, which enables you to cut the remaining thread with the touch of a button. The LCD screen displays the selected stitch, stitch width and length, and the recommended presser foot. The screen brightness can be adjusted.

Select stitches on Singer 9970 can be mirror imaged with just the touch of a button. Stitches can also be elongated up to 5 times. Even though the stitch width and length are automatic, you can override them for customization. The maximum stitch width is 7mm. You can also sew without using the foot pedal. You just need to use the sewing start/stop button and the speed control slider. You can have good control over the sewing speed, thanks to the speed control slider. The machine can sew at a maximum speed of 850 stitches/min. The machine can sew very slowly as well.

The needle position button is absolutely vital for quilters. You also have the option to drop the feed dogs for free-motion sewing. 5 monogramming fonts are available. It is also equipped with automatic bobbin winding. The free arm allows you to sew cuffs and sleeves. The extension table provides the extra space required to accommodate large projects. 2 LED bulbs illuminate the work space.

Most user-friendly feature we found on Singer 9970 is the direct stitch selection button. Separate buttons are provided for most frequently used stitches including straight, zigzag, blind-hem and one buttonhole. All other stitches need to be selected by means of stitch number. This is a really convenient feature. Not many manufacturers other than Singer, provide such a feature in this price segment. The electronic twin needle control automatically adjusts the stitches for twin needle sewing.

Automatic locking stitch button ties off stitches and prevents unraveling. The reverse sewing button is conveniently located. 25 needle positions are available on Singer 9970. Even though the tension is automatic, you can adjust it if you want. The extra-high presser foot lifter allows more clearance to accommodate bulky fabrics. An on-board storage compartment is provided to store all the accessories. A hard cover is also included. The machine weighs 17.8 lbs which is neither too heavy nor too light. It comes with 25 year limited warranty.

Ease of Use

The machine is easy to thread. The best thing about Singer 9970 has always been its stitch quality. The machine handles all types of fabric with ease, especially denim. We have tested it with 8 layers of denim and it sewed beautifully. There were no signs of strain and the machine had adequate power to sew through multiple layers. We also tested the machine with 8 layers of knit and the stitches came out great. The buttonhole stitches are also of great quality. In fact, Singer 9970 makes one of the finest buttonholes when compared to other machines in the segment.

The machine operates smoothly and quietly. It has one of the best feed system around, and it feeds straight without the sewer's help. The stitch variety of this machine is simply outstanding, there is no competition for 9970 in this department. One little thing we noticed was that the stitch quality improves at slower speeds. This doesn't mean that the stitch quality is poor at high speeds, just that slight improvement is noticed while sewing slowly. The build quality is very good. The machine is heavy enough to prevent instability.

Drawbacks

Monogram letters are slightly small for our liking.

The automatic needle threader may require couple of attempts to get used to.

User manual could be more detailed.

Availability of Singer 9970 is a question mark as the machine has gone out of stock in major stores.

Pros

•    Feature packed
•    Variety of stitches
•    Excellent stitch quality
•    Quiet operation

Cons

•    Small monograms
•    User manual needs improvement

Editor Comments

Singer 9970 is a champion performer. Forget the features, you can simply trust this machine for its stitch quality. It is very user-friendly as well.
