Singer M1500 is an entry level mechanical sewing machine. It comes with 6 built-in stitches and 57 stitch applications. It has a 4-step buttonhole but I would have loved a 1-step buttonhole though, never mind. The bobbin is front loading type, which means you will have to remove the accessory compartment to access it. I really like the position of the stitch selector dial, it is positioned right in front of you (as if it is looking straight towards you). This is a change as we are used to sewing machines having stitch selector dial on our right hand side. Ergonomically speaking, I would still prefer machines that have dials on my right hand side, but this still is a refreshing change.
The thread tension dial allows you to fine tune the tension according to the type of fabric you are using. The reverse stitch lever is also located in a convenient place. You can easily engage it. An LED work light is provided to work in the dark. As I have said earlier, Singer M1500 weighs just around 10 lbs which means you can easily carry it to your sewing classes or store it away when you are not using it. I think it is one of the lightest sewing machines in the market (from a mainstream manufacturer). For sewing cuffs and sleeves you can access free arm by removing the accessory storage compartment. For free motion works, you need to use the darning plate. A manual thread cutter is provided on the side of the machine. For sewing multiple layers, there is an extra high presser foot lifter which gives you extra clearance to get your fabric in.
Ease of Use
Singer M1500 is a simple, easy to use machine. All the basic sewing tasks can be done on this machine. There is nothing complicated about this machine. You can thread it easily. The stitch quality seems to be good. Reading the user manual thoroughly before sewing will help iron out most of the user errors. Moreover, there are several YouTube videos to help you out. There is nothing more to say about this sewing machine. It does what it is meant for, which is basic sewing. Do not expect this machine to handle heavy duty stuffs like 10 layers of extra thick fabrics, as it is not designed for that kind of work.
Drawbacks
One drawback of Singer M1500 is that there is no automatic needle threader, which might be something that the elderly would have loved to have. Now that it doesn't have one, you will have to rely on your eyesight to thread the needle.
Pros
- Super light sewing machine
- Easy to use
- Good for basic sewing
- Good stitch quality
Cons
- No automatic needle threader
- No top drop-in bobbin
- No 1-step buttonhole
Review Verdict
Singer M1500 is not a fancy machine, it doesn't come with a lot of bells and whistles, but it does get the job done. It is an excellent starter sewing machine.
