If you are in the market for an entry level sewing machine, you are bound to be confused as there are so many options out there. Here I am going to talk about one such sewing machine, the Singer MX60. It is a cute little sewing machine, that is light enough (just weighs 12.4 lbs) just to get you started with the art of sewing. It comes with 6 built-in stitches and 57 stitch applications. It has a 4-step buttonhole (I would have loved a 1-step buttonhole though, never mind). The bobbin is front loading type, which means you will have to remove the accessory compartment to access it. I really like the position of the stitch selector dial, it is positioned right in front of you. The thread tension dial allows you to fine tune the tension according to the type of fabric you are using. The reverse stitch lever is also located in a convenient place. You can easily engage it. An LED work light is provided to work in the dark. As I have said earlier, Singer MX60 weighs just 12.4 lbs which means you can easily carry it to your sewing classes or store it away when you are not using it. For sewing cuffs and sleeves you can access free arm by removing the accessory storage compartment.
Ease of Use
Singer MX60 is a simple, easy to use machine. All the basic sewing tasks can be done on this machine. There is nothing complicated about this machine. You can thread it easily. The stitch quality seems to be good. Reading the user manual thoroughly before sewing will help iron out most of the user errors. There is nothing more to say about this sewing machine. It does what it is meant for, which is basic sewing. Do not expect this machine to handle heavy duty stuffs like 10 layers of extra thick fabrics, as it is not designed for that kind of work. For free motion works, you need to use the darning plate.
Drawbacks
One drawback of Singer MX60 is that there is no automatic needle threader, which might be something that the elderly would have loved to have.
Pros
- Lightweight
- Easy to use
- Good for basic sewing
- Good stitch quality
Cons
- No automatic needle threader
- No top drop-in bobbin
- No 1-step buttonhole
Review Verdict
Singer MX60 is not a fancy machine, it doesn't come with a lot of bells and whistles, but it does get the job done. It is an excellent starter sewing machine.
