Editor rating

The brand Siruba might require some introduction. Siruba is a Taiwanese company which manufactures overlock and chainstitch sewing machines. They have already made their presence felt in 80 countries around the world including United States. What made Siruba popular here is the HSO-747D serger. It is one of the most affordable sergers you can get in US. The popularity of HSO-747D is mainly due to the quality it offers in an affordable range.

SiRUBA HSO-747D is a two needle convertible 3 or 4-thread serger. It features a color coded threading chart to make threading easy. There is one good feature called micro safety switch, which prevents the machine from sewing when the front cover is opened. This serger does have a differential feed mechanism. You can adjust it in 0.7 to 2.0 ratio. Unlike many other sergers which have a dial for differential feed adjustment, this one has a knob. You can convert this machine to free arm by removing the support bed. Free arm is one feature that may be important for some. I have seen very expensive sergers without free arm, so kudos to Siruba for providing this feature.

Tension can be adjusted using the dial. For providing consistent stitch quality on all types of fabrics, this machine is equipped with an adjustable presser foot pressure. HSO-747D has a very impressive motor which is capable of delivering up to 1,500 stitches/min. This is really fast compared to other sergers in the segment (most of them come with a 1,300 stitches/min motor). The sewing speed control is achieved with the help of a foot pedal. Stitch width is 6mm (4 thread) and 6mm or 4mm (3 thread). The stitch length can be adjusted from 1mm-5mm. A sewing light is provided for working in the dark.  HSO-747D weighs approximately 15 lbs. So it is easy to carry.

Ease of Use

SiRUBA HSO-747D  has some good features, especially when you consider the segment it is placed in. It does a reasonable job with different kinds of fabrics. The cutting knife is also very sharp. It also comes threaded in the box. To prevent thread breaking you need to set the tension right, otherwise you might jump into trouble. So read the user manual thoroughly or you can watch some YouTube videos to learn how to thread.

The overall build quality can be improved.

Review Verdict

SiRUBA HSO-747D  has the potential of becoming a great serging tool. It comes with good variety of features in an affordable range. It may not be the most user-friendly serger you will ever see, but with some patience and practice, this serger can sew some good stitches.
